Champions Cup Reform: Prem Rugby's Bold Vision for the Future (2026)

A bold vision for the future of European rugby is taking shape, with a potential shake-up of the Champions Cup on the horizon. This proposal, backed by Prem Rugby and its French and United Rugby Championship counterparts, aims to bring back the glory days of the tournament, adding more excitement and prestige.

But here's where it gets controversial: the current format, criticized by fans and pundits, is set in stone until 2030. Despite this, Prem Rugby is determined to enact change, believing the competition has become bloated and drawn-out.

"We want an elite, premium competition," a source revealed. "We're dissatisfied with the current state and are working on plans for reform."

The proposed changes include reducing the number of teams and playing the entire competition over consecutive weekends, creating a more intense and captivating experience. This idea has been explored before, with EPCR considering a 16-team route, but the challenge lies in achieving unanimity among stakeholders, particularly the Irish provinces, who have historically resisted reform.

And this is the part most people miss: the main obstacle to immediate change is the television deal with Premier Sports, which runs until 2027. Any alterations before then would require the broadcaster's approval, despite a potential reduction in matches. However, there's hope that an improved tournament quality might convince Premier Sports.

The television rights renewal from 2027 onwards is expected to focus on format reform, with the lead broadcaster of the Prem potentially re-entering the European rugby market. This could unify all domestic English rugby on one channel, showcasing a strong English presence at the 2027 World Cup.

So, what do you think? Is this proposed revamp a step in the right direction for European rugby? Or does it raise more concerns? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
