Eddie Hearn has recently evaluated Conor Benn's prospects in a potential matchup with Shakur Stevenson, a fighter widely regarded as one of the best defensive boxers in the world. This intriguing scenario unfolded after Hearn observed Benn, one of his prominent British fighters, making a bold call-out to Stevenson.
Stevenson, who recently transitioned to the super-lightweight division, showcased his skills by decisively defeating Teofimo Lopez last month. He mentioned names such as Devin Haney, potential unification fights if Stevenson remains at 140 pounds, as well as other notable contenders like Gary Russell, Dalton Smith, and Richardson Hitchins. Hearn expressed confidence in Stevenson’s ability to prevail against most opponents in that category.
When the conversation shifted specifically to Conor Benn – who notably was not included in Hearn’s earlier list of fighters – the promoter acknowledged the challenge that this fight would represent for Benn. "Looking at this matchup from my standpoint as Conor’s promoter, the only aspect I find favorable is Conor’s size advantage. He possesses significant physicality and hits harder than Stevenson. However, it’s Shakur we’re talking about here, and he presents a tough challenge. Conor is incredibly driven and eager to take on everyone. Personally, I want to see him capture a world title," Hearn commented.
Currently, Benn appears more likely to face Rolando Romero next, although he still has to navigate the mandatory challenge posed by Shakhram Giyasov. Alternatively, he could meet the winner of the upcoming fight between Mario Barrios and Ryan Garcia later this month.
On the other hand, Stevenson has a vacant lightweight title awaiting a new champion and has shown interest in fighting Isaac 'Pitbull' Cruz. Nevertheless, a transition to the welterweight division remains a possibility for Benn, alongside contenders like Haney or Garcia.
