The Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) has embarked on a massive project to replace a problematic section of water main in Oakland County, Michigan. This decision comes in the wake of two recent ruptures, which have caused significant disruptions to water service for thousands of customers in the region. The affected area, a three-mile stretch along 14 Mile Road, is a 48-inch pre-stressed concrete cylinder pipe installed by Interpace in the 1970s. With an estimated 4% of Interpace's pipes being faulty, the GLWA's move to replace this section is a necessary step towards ensuring reliable water supply.
The replacement project, estimated to cost $81 million, will be a significant undertaking. It will involve constructing a 54-inch steel pipe, a more robust and durable alternative to the current concrete cylinder.
