Local Music Scene Supports Bloomington-Normal's WYSE Food Pantry (2026)

A powerful story of community support and resilience is unfolding in Bloomington-Normal, where a small but mighty food pantry, WYSE, is making a big impact. Marty Lane, a local hero, has dedicated her life to feeding those in need, inspired by her grandfather's community garden and a desire to serve.

Marty's journey began in West Bloomington, where she grew up learning the value of service. Her grandfather's annual Easter egg hunt and community garden left an indelible mark on her, shaping her into the compassionate leader she is today. When her grandfather passed away, Marty and her family carried on his legacy, transforming their garage into a hub of generosity.

WYSE, an acronym for Westside Youth are Something Extraordinary, started as a simple lunch and learn initiative in Marty's backyard. But it quickly grew into something much bigger, becoming a safe haven for kids in the neighborhood who needed structure and support. Marty's house became a place where kids could learn and grow, and her family's dedication to the community has kept her own children grounded and humble.

WYSE's impact is immense, serving up to 600 families each month, with demand increasing during challenging times like the COVID pandemic and government shutdowns. The pantry's simple rules reflect its inclusive nature: take what you need, no questions asked. Marty's commitment to feeding those in need is unwavering, regardless of their background or circumstances.

But here's where it gets controversial... WYSE, despite its immense impact, has primarily been self-funded. However, a group of musicians, led by rapper and electronic musician M0j0 (Johnnie Owens), stepped up to support this vital cause. M0j0's initiative, Starving Artists, aims to organize benefit shows and grassroots efforts to support local communities. By connecting with friends and fellow musicians, M0j0 has sparked a movement that is making a tangible difference.

And this is the part most people miss... the power of community-driven initiatives. Bridget Lantz, a music promoter, joined forces with M0j0, and together they organized a benefit show at Meltdown Creative Works, collecting donations for WYSE. The impact was immediate, with M0j0 personally delivering 10 bags of groceries and $75 to WYSE, which, as Marty points out, can go a long way in providing much-needed protein for families.

M0j0's next fundraiser, featuring a lineup of talented artists, will take place on January 24th at the Coffeehouse in Normal. Patrons can enjoy the show and support WYSE by bringing donations, with suggested items ranging from toiletries to adult diapers.

For WYSE, this support is a game-changer. It provides them with the opportunity to dream bigger and plan for the future, including the potential purchase of a building in West Bloomington to create a "free market" offering clothes, furniture, and their usual food and hygiene supplies. After years of self-funding, WYSE is finally getting the recognition and support it deserves.

But Marty Lane's story is a reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness can have a massive impact. WYSE may be a small building, but its reach is immense, serving a huge community in need. It's a testament to the power of local initiatives and the difference one person can make.

So, what do you think? Is community support the key to tackling social issues? Should we be doing more to support local initiatives like WYSE? Let's spark a conversation in the comments and share our thoughts on the power of community!
