Scotland's Giant Cranes: A Fight for Preservation (2026)

Scotland's iconic giant cranes: a symbol of our industrial past, but what's their future?

These four magnificent structures, listed as category A, are a testament to our nation's rich history and architecture. With their towering presence and intricate latticework, they stand as silent sentinels, reminding us of a bygone era.

However, their preservation comes at a cost. The damp Scottish climate poses a constant challenge, and owners face a legal obligation to maintain these giants, an expensive endeavor. Just imagine the cost of repainting the Forth Bridge, a mere £130 million!

But here's where it gets controversial... the smaller cranes, though requiring less paint, still demand a significant investment. Take the Barclay Curle crane, now showing signs of rust. Its owner, Mitchell, hopes to repaint it soon, but the financial burden is daunting.

And this is the part most people miss... these cranes could become self-sustaining! Mitchell proposes commercial ventures, like a zip-wire attraction, to generate revenue for their upkeep.

"It's iconic, it has to stay," he says, but the government can't foot the bill.

Glasgow MSP Paul Sweeney, an advocate for industrial heritage, is taking action. He aims to unite the crane owners, exploring cost-effective maintenance strategies.

"By standardizing maintenance protocols, we can reduce costs and take a collective approach," Sweeney explains. He also believes sponsorship and advertising could be a viable solution.

Miles Oglethorpe, a former expert at Historic Environment Scotland, is optimistic about advancements in paint and steel-coating technology, which could lower preservation costs.

"Scotland's iconic cranes are an integral part of our cultural identity. They should be celebrated and conserved like our ancient castles. Their long-term survival depends on us understanding their value," he emphasizes.

So, what do you think? Can we find a way to preserve these giants for future generations? Let's discuss in the comments!
