Sione Fukofuka: A New Chapter for Scottish Women's Rugby
The Scottish Rugby Union has made a bold move by appointing Australian coach Sione Fukofuka as the new head coach of the women's team. This decision comes as a surprise to many, given Fukofuka's recent history with the USA women's team.
Fukofuka takes over from Bryan Easson, who led Scotland to the Women's Rugby World Cup quarter-finals this year. Easson's leadership was instrumental in the team's success, but it seems the time has come for a change in direction.
Fukofuka's appointment is a strategic move, as he brings a wealth of experience in women's international rugby. His previous role as assistant coach for the Australian women's team and attack coach for the Queensland Reds women's team has prepared him well for this challenge.
However, Fukofuka's time with the USA women's team ended on a bittersweet note. Despite his efforts, the team narrowly missed out on the World Cup knockouts, leaving a lasting impact on his coaching career.
The Scottish women's rugby team now faces an exciting yet challenging journey. Their Six Nations campaign begins with an away match against Wales on April 11, followed by encounters with Italy (April 25) and Ireland (May 17). The team will then host the defending champions, England (April 18) and France (May 9).
Despite their recent success, the Scots won only two of their five Tests in the 2025 championship. This highlights the need for a fresh approach and a renewed focus on development.
Fukofuka expressed his enthusiasm for the role, stating, 'An aligned domestic pathway and emphasis on the increasing professionalism of the senior programme through the Celtic Challenge and the senior Scotland Women team is exciting.'
He continued, 'I look forward to connecting with the talented players, quality staff, and invested stakeholders across the program to drive a high-performance environment that develops the players to their potential and produces a style of rugby that can be successful.'
Scottish Rugby's Chief Executive, Alex Williamson, emphasized the importance of Fukofuka's appointment, stating, 'Sione brings many years of experience within women's international rugby, and we want to build the strongest possible coaching setup to take us forward at this crucial time.'
The appointment is subject to a visa, and Fukofuka will be based in Edinburgh. This move marks a significant step in the development of Scottish women's rugby, and the rugby community eagerly awaits the results of this exciting new chapter.
