Introducing SPECS Augmented Reality Glasses: A Revolutionary Step Towards Natural Computing
Today, we unveil SPECS, our groundbreaking augmented reality glasses, at the Augmented World Expo 2026. This marks a significant milestone in our journey at Snap, where we've been striving to create technology that enhances human connection and interaction.
A Vision for the Future
From the inception of Snap, our mission has been to harness technology's potential to bring people closer together. This led us to the realm of augmented reality, a field we've been cultivating for over a decade. Our goal is to build a future where computers seamlessly understand the world as we do, not just through text and taps, but through sight, sound, movement, and context.
As computers have evolved, becoming smaller, more powerful, and more integrated into our daily lives, they've also become more demanding of our attention. We often find ourselves glued to screens, detracting from the present moment. This is where SPECS come in, aiming to revolutionize how we interact with technology.
Redefining Computing with SPECS
SPECS are designed to seamlessly integrate computing into our surroundings, enhancing our experiences without distracting us from the world around us. Augmented reality, in our view, is the most natural way to interact with computers, mirroring how we perceive and engage with the world visually, socially, and in three dimensions.
Crafting Everyday Wearables
Building augmented reality glasses that are both powerful and comfortable was a formidable challenge. We aimed to create a device that was lightweight yet capable, addressing the limitations of existing solutions. Traditional AI glasses are lightweight but limited in functionality, while headsets offer power but can be cumbersome and isolating.
SPECS are designed to be fully standalone, free from any puck or tether. Crafted from high-performance Swiss TR90 polymer, they come in two sizes: the 47 mm model weighs 132 grams, and the 52 mm model weighs 136 grams. Removable inserts accommodate various prescriptions, ensuring comfort and customization.
Displaying the World with Clarity
At the heart of SPECS is our proprietary liquid crystal on silicon technology, delivering an expansive 51-degree field of view and 16 million colors. This results in a display that feels like a 24-inch desktop monitor for work or a 115-inch home cinema screen for entertainment, all while maintaining a lightweight design.
We've also enhanced our waveguide technology, utilizing billions of invisibly small nanostructures to create a clearer and more seamless view of the world. Inspired by Boeing 787 Dreamliner windows, the electrochromic lenses transition from clear to tinted in just 10 seconds, ensuring a natural and unobtrusive experience.
Augmenting the Present Moment
The essence of augmented reality lies in its ability to make computing useful in the moment. SPECS empower users with features like real-time directions, space measurement, and AI assistance, all while allowing users to remain engaged with their surroundings.
These glasses transform any environment into a workspace, enabling screen casting, content streaming, and collaboration. Developers have already created hundreds of Lenses for SPECS, unlocking shared experiences that go beyond traditional screens, such as interactive lessons on a drum set or educational tools that visualize invisible forces.
Understanding the World with AI
To make augmented reality feel natural, digital experiences must understand the physical world. SPECS are powered by two Snapdragon processors, one dedicated to computer vision and the other to running Lenses. This setup enables fast hand tracking, low latency, and responsive interactions, ensuring digital content feels seamlessly integrated into the real world.
With a 7-millisecond motion-to-photon latency, verified through advanced robotic measurement systems, SPECS offer a responsive and immersive experience. The included charging case provides four additional charges, extending the device's mixed-use battery life to up to 20 hours.
A Platform for Developers and Innovation
Just as significant computing platforms have been defined by the software built for them, we believe augmented reality will thrive through developer creativity. Over the past year and a half, we've released 10 Snap OS updates with over 40 new features and APIs, fostering a vibrant ecosystem of Lenses for SPECS.
We're introducing agentic development for SPECS Lenses in Lens Studio, along with the SPECS Spatial Benchmark, Migration Agent, and a Native Development Kit. These tools empower developers to bring their own code and libraries into Lens Studio, unlocking new possibilities for augmented reality.
AI and Augmented Reality: A Natural Alliance
AI becomes more valuable when it understands context. SPECS enable AI to see what we see, comprehend our goals, and provide assistance in the moment. This means guidance appears where needed, information is contextually relevant, and developers can create experiences that respond intelligently to the real world in real-time.
We believe AI and augmented reality are inherently aligned, both enhancing our understanding and interaction with the world. However, the success of such technology relies on trust, which must be built into the design from the outset.
Privacy as a Core Principle
Privacy has been a fundamental design consideration at Snap since our inception. SPECS are designed with transparency, asking for explicit consent before accessing sensitive information and indicating when recording occurs. They prioritize on-device processing, giving users control over data storage, syncing, sharing, and deletion.
We believe people should have a clear understanding of how their data is used and remain in control of their experience. Trust is not an afterthought but a foundational element of our technology.
Creativity and Technology: A Powerful Alliance
Technology gains meaning when creative individuals use it in unexpected ways. To celebrate this synergy, we're launching a global SPECS campaign featuring renowned photographer Steven Meisel and celebrities like Jimmy Butler, Imogen Heap, Hoyeon, Jack Harlow, and Kaia Gerber. These Visionaries are collaborating with Snap to envision new SPECS experiences, emphasizing creativity, expression, presence, and play.
Stay tuned for more exciting updates later this year.
