Ambulances Queue Outside Arrowe Park Hospital: A Crisis in the NHS
A chilling scene unfolded on a frigid Thursday evening at Arrowe Park Hospital in Merseyside. Dozens of ambulances lined up outside the hospital, their drivers waiting patiently to hand over patients to hospital staff. One NHS worker, speaking to the ECHO, revealed a harrowing experience, having been stuck outside with a patient for an entire day.
The ambulance clinician who captured these images estimated that 23 ambulances were parked outside, representing every available ambulance on the Wirral and around six from Liverpool. This crisis is linked to the hospital's non-compliance with the NHS England policy known as Handover 45, which aims to limit ambulance handover times to a maximum of 45 minutes.
The clinician emphasized the consequences of these delays, stating that prolonged waiting times put patients in the community at high risk. These patients, lacking clinical interventions or monitoring while waiting, are vulnerable to deterioration. Additionally, residents calling 999 may face significant delays in receiving ambulance services, despite the efforts of call operators and dispatchers.
The pressure on Arrowe Park and other hospitals in the region is unprecedented, reportedly the worst flu season the country has ever witnessed. This crisis exacerbates existing challenges, as evidenced by the latest government figures. In the week ending December 29, 28,906 patients arrived at NHS hospitals in Merseyside, with nearly one in five (19%) waiting over an hour for admission. The worst day was December 28, with 145 patients stuck in ambulances for more than an hour. The Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust reported 240 patients with handover delays exceeding an hour during the week.
A Wirral University Teaching Hospital spokesperson acknowledged the situation, prioritizing patient safety and working closely with healthcare partners to improve patient flow, support timely discharges, reduce waiting times in the Emergency Department, and release ambulances for community emergencies. Despite the challenges, the hospital's dedicated staff strive to provide the best possible care in these difficult circumstances.
